Two-sided Science

I was less than enthralled with the first day of CSLP. After sitting in a waiting room for 20 minutes, I was sent to a flustered teacher who forgot I was coming. My hastily assigned task: wash science equipment. For the entire time. However, today's experience reignited my hope. I walked in only to find myself amidst a buzzing science fair. At first, I wandered around aimlessly searching for the teacher (who, according to Principal Hedlund, had suddenly gone "m.i.a.").
After 15 minutes, a man walked up to me, asked me if I wanted to be a science fair judge, and shoved evaluations in my arms. At first I was intimidated- I am an International Studies major for a reason- but luckily years of required biology and chemistry came flooding back.

Talking to the students about their projects was really fun. Some of them, notably the electric door opener fashioned from a remote control car motor and the elaborate guinea pig maze, were really impressive. Many students were genuinely excited about their experiments; I spent 20 minutes listening to one student explain to me the history of parachutes and the science behind how fast they fall. Despite the chaos of students running around, screaming, and looking at their friend's projects, it was a postive experience. The students were really excited about science, and that was nice to see.

I think my favorite part of this program is the fact that we get out of the NW part of the city. I went to SE for freshman service experience at the beginning of the year, and I go to church and to see a friend often in NE, but really that's it. I don't like spending all my time in only one quarter of the city.
I really liked traveling to Brookland to go to Hope Charter School, and I got to see where Dance Place is, which I've wanted to visit for a while now. Hope Charter School is really new, in fact they moved into their current facility last december, only two months ago. So everything looks really fresh and clean, and everyone seems happy to be there. I was really impressed with the principle, beause he went out of his way to find us and introduce himself, and he seemed like a really nice guy. Also, when parents were coming to pick up their kids, he went around joking with all of the kids and parents, and he seemed to know all the kids names.
I was dissapointed with the job we were given to do, which was stuffing envelopes and labeling them. I'd really wanted to start getting to know the kids. The good part of it was that I got to see where the different students live. I was suprised that there was a mix, that there were addresses from each quadrant of the city.
All in all, I think that this is going to be a great, really educational experience.

first visit to the school

when i first went the school i did not know what to expect. we where told by the principle that the school was connected to a church, so i new that it would be very small. the school goes from Pre-k to 4th grade and all of the classes are small, no more then fifteen students in most of the classes. i was assigned to a first grade class where most of the kids seemed very smart and eager to learn. I was surprised that the classes where so small, I new it was a charter school, but these classes are half the size of classes in a public school. I feel that it will be interesting to see, in my future visits, how the teachers use the small class size to do more exciting activities.

First Blog Prompt

Most of you have just visited your site, and all of us will be interested in what happened. While you can write anything you want about that first visit, here are some prompts if you need them: What were your expectations? What surprised you? Did you meet anyone interesting? What was the building like? How was the trip?
